Integrated Nursing Practice 5

Updated: Nov 9

During the completion of this unit, which spanned 8 weeks and involved 320 hours of clinical practice, I integrated and critically applied clinical practice and evidence-based theory. I demonstrated the delivery of safe and effective person-centered care in alignment with the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards of Practice. I explored all relevant standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and the National Safety, Aged Care Standards, and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) in the context of nursing practice. This unit served as a complement to other third-year units, consolidating my learning up to that point. It was a work-integrated learning unit, with the majority of my learning occurring in off-campus healthcare contexts.

In this unit, my learning revolved around experiential learning, involving an extended period in the off-campus healthcare environment. I attended various healthcare settings such as clinics, home-based care, community facilities, and acute-care facilities. Within these contexts, I assumed advanced responsibilities, taking on the coordination and leadership of care for consumers, families, and the broader community.

To prepare for this unit, I reviewed theoretical concepts from previous units to apply them in practical settings. I completed a mandatory interprofessional education learning module, requiring the application of problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills. Additionally, I revisited concepts related to the safe and quality use of medicines and their administration.

A peer learning community of practice fostered active collaboration and provided extra support and social engagement during off-campus placement. Clinical supervisors facilitated the transfer of prior knowledge and skills to real-world contexts, enabling me to demonstrate satisfactory achievement of criteria in the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) at the level of a beginning registered nurse. Learning experiences focused on promoting the implementation of evidence-based scientific knowledge, communication, critical inquiry, digital literacy, and intra- and interprofessional collaboration as an ethical, socially inclusive, and culturally safe practitioner. Attendance at an off-campus clinical placement was a requirement for this unit.

Learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate beginner practitioner level nursing care that is consistent with the principles of the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards of Practice and the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards at a beginner practitioner level.

  • Safely and accurately perform medication calculations and demonstrate safe administration of medicines in both the simulated environment and the clinical practice setting.

  • Demonstrate critical thinking and clinical reasoning in diverse and complex healthcare settings consistent with the provision of safe, quality person-centred care across the lifespan.

  • Coordinate and lead the provision of care for consumers, families, and the broader community, under supervision.

Projects

Project One

Med+Safe Exam.

The exam comprised multiple-choice questions related to safe practice in MedSafe.

Project Two

Interprofessional education learning module.

I was given a link to the Faculty of Health Interprofessional Education (IPE) Canvas site, where I had to complete Module 3: Interprofessional Conflict and Collaboration, take the corresponding quiz, and generate a certificate of completion.

This learning activity enhanced my understanding of effective teamwork, collaboration, and conflict resolution within the IPE context. The module incorporated scenarios and emphasized complex problems and team processes, including leadership capabilities.

Project Three

Practice performance – Clinical placement.

During my assigned clinical placements, I underwent assessment based on the demonstration of various skills related to providing safe, quality, person-centered care. Performance assessment aligned with the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice and the Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT). I had to showcase satisfactory achievement of the seven standards and their related criteria at this level. Throughout the clinical placement, I received formative verbal and written feedback on my progress.
