Leading and Learning: Building Professional Capacity

Updated: Nov 9

This unit facilitated my successful transition into the role of a registered nurse, capable of delivering safe, quality, person-centered nursing care. It emphasized the nurse's role in applying principles of leadership and management. The exploration included the nurse leader's influence on safe nursing practice, covering facilitators and barriers, as well as regulatory, legislative, and political processes in relation to consumer advocacy. The unit delved into nursing leadership and interprofessional collaboration, focusing on developing and realizing improvements in health outcomes. Building on the knowledge gained in NSB104 Leading and Learning and NSB102 Professional Practice and Cultural Safety from the first year, it played a crucial role in preparing and transitioning me from a student to a graduate registered nurse. The overarching theme of evidence-based practice underpinned this unit.

This unit utilized inquiry-based learning approaches within a blended learning framework to prepare me for the Registered Nurse role in nursing practice. Learning opportunities took place through workshops and online activities. It was essential for me to actively engage with and take responsibility for my learning. The teaching team was available for consultation and discussion throughout the semester. Recognizing the value of peer learning and the knowledge gained from discussions, collaborative learning opportunities in the form of online activities were provided. As an independent thinker and lifelong learner, I was expected to actively engage with and take responsibility for my own learning and unit success.

Learning outcomes

  • Apply knowledge and skills of professional nursing practice and strategic leadership in the context of the role of the new graduate registered nurse.

  • Within the context of transition to graduate nurse, employ leadership and clinical reasoning capabilities to critically evaluate practice priorities in the provision of safe, effective and holistic person-centred care.

Projects

Project One

Classroom based quizzes.

I had to undergo an invigilated assessment that required me to review key elements relevant to nursing professional practice and demonstrate an understanding of the expectations for practice as a beginning registered nurse.

Project Two

Managing Conflict Resolution.

I completed an assessment that involved writing an essay on conflict resolution in the workplace for the Graduate RN. I submitted a 3-minute video that captured the main focus of the essay. The assessment centered on professional issues and leadership challenges that I, as a graduate registered nurse, might encounter in my first year of practice.

Project Three

Building Professional Capacity.

The essay assessment centered on professional issues and leadership challenges that I, as a graduate registered nurse, might have experienced in my first year of practice.
