Leading and Learning

Updated: Feb 5

This foundation unit in leading and learning developed the knowledge necessary to function as an effective team member, consumer advocate, educator, and leader of self and others. Peoples’ experience of health care, nurses’ therapeutic communication skills and facilitating interactions that represent person-centred care principles are a particular focus. These are key attributes of the registered nurse in contemporary practice, contributing to practice that meets the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and Aged Care Quality Standards, and provided the basis for team and professional leadership for the future. The unit encouraged different ways of thinking, broad perspectives, and evidence-based decision making to inform practice in local and global contexts.

Learning outcomes

  • Examine the role of the registered nurse within the nursing profession, including the provision of safe and quality person-centred care in relation to concepts of self leadership and professional capabilities

  • Apply knowledge of the NMBA (2016) Registered Nurses Standards for Practice 1 and 2 concerning professional, ethical, social, and cultural dimensions of communication to establish and maintain therapeutic relationships and professional and consumer partnerships in health care

  • Explain key professional challenges within contemporary and future healthcare environments for both the individual and community

  • Apply digital and academic literacy skills to locate and integrate relevant evidence to inform practice.

Projects

Project One

A series of online quizzes to complete throughout the semester.

The quizzes were multiple choice, assessing my knowledge of the content covered in the unit, and were completed online.

Project Two

Reflection and digital presentation.

I researched a key issue relevant to person-centered care and identified, in a short presentation, the key challenges this issue presented for patients and for nurses' leadership skills. I was also required to provide a brief reflection on the team processes involved in the group presentation.

Project Three

Leadership scenarios.

I analyzed selected leadership scenarios and, using my knowledge of nursing standards and professional responsibility, identified and explained the rationale for actions or strategies in response to the scenario, supporting the points with evidence. I applied insights from my own leadership and communication styles in relation to suggested leadership responsibilities and strategies.
