Mental Health: Self and Others

Updated: Feb 5

I focused on the National Health Priority of mental health and explored the social determinants, legislation, and policies that informed nursing care provision. Mental health issues were acknowledged as a universal human experience across the lifespan and affected one in 4 Australians. In this unit, my learning activities embedded the concepts of recovery and cultural safety, as well as trauma-informed care, in promoting positive messages that challenged stigma and discrimination. Emphasis was given to the development of my professional self and attributes of trust, rapport building, and a non-judgmental approach to practice. Focus was also directed towards developing skills in assessing and responding to people who experienced symptoms of mental illness. This included history-taking, mental state, and risk assessment, while utilizing the recovery framework.

Learning outcomes

  • Apply principles of cultural safety and reflect on self to articulate the role of self in person-centred mental health care and therapeutic use of self

  • Demonstrate an understanding of biopsychosocial and mental status assessment, and clinical formulation, informed by the recovery model and person-centred care

Projects

Project One

Reflection and discussion.

I identified and reflected on key influences that informed and shaped my understanding of mental health and mental illness. Additionally, I reflected on perspectives of mental health portrayed within the community and identified actions towards improving communication skills for the provision of person-centered care.

Project Two

Case study.

I conducted a biopsychosocial and mental status assessment to create a clinical formulation (informed by the recovery model) that enhanced the provision of person-centered care.

Project Three

Case-based analysis.

I engaged in self-paced online modules for this assessment, which involved case-based analysis with questions related to clinical practice.
